Marisa is a Southern California artist who works primarily in drawing and painting.
She graduated magna cum laude from the Atlanta College of Art in 2005 with a BFA
degree in Painting, and earned an MFA in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from
California State University, Fullerton in 2009. Marisa has exhibited nationally and
throughout Southern California. She lives and works in the greater Los
Angeles/Long Beach area.

I make sculptures, drawings and paintings that inspect conversation, relationships, society, and evolution via the interpretive nature of imagination. My own experiences with birth, loss, partnerhood, and parenthood are the themes behind my current work. Aiming to create new narratives correspondent to the human condition, I invent abstracted biomorphic figures and landscapes inspired by the flora and fauna of Earth.

My work illustrates the noise these creatures make and the space they fill; their relationships and their solitude; their closeness and their voids. Primordial and gleeful, they are not without familial and societal hierarchy, ceremony and ritual. Composition, color, space, and relationships between forms tell a story that is sometimes a whisper and often a scream. They are an advanced society, rainbow-toned with unusual beauty, and we are observers in parallel.

Surrealism can offer a glimmer of recognition within an alien world, a familiar figure visible only out of the corner of your eye, the faintly remembered dream that eludes your grasp. These are the spaces that I inhabit and explore, and they are the setting of my invented worlds.
